Mary "Cathy" Sanders Madden was born on February 26, 1951, to John and Mary Sanders in Macon, Georgia. She lived Seventy-three long and glorious years until this past Friday, the 27th of September. Cathy graduated from Margaret McEvoy High School in 1969, and went on to graduate from Mercer University in 1972 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics. She was the first person in her family to receive a college degree and used that opportunity not to benefit herself, but rather for the purpose of enriching the lives of her family and others. She taught in poor communities, entered into the computer field far before women were welcome, and was a leader to others. Cathy was a religious woman who lived her beliefs by example. Like all of us, she was handed pain, loss, anger, and doubt in life, but she always seemed to remind herself to continue to lead a life of kindness and giving, making sure others knew how much they were loved. Cathy loved word games, reading, and a good red lipstick. She also loved spending time with family, especially with her grandsons who she adored. Our hope is that others don’t see her as a memory but rather a person who continues to leave an indelible impression of a purposeful life. We have no doubt God welcomed her into heaven. We hope she knows how much she was loved by those around her.
She is survived by her mother Mary Sanders, her sons James (Maria) Madden and John (Suzie) Madden, grandsons Emil, Sanders, Louis and Carter Madden, and sisters Lori (Keith) Carnes and Susan (Richard) Rayson.
A private memorial will be held with family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a tribute gift in her memory to Mercer University. https://www.mercer.edu/give
