Thomas Carter, or Tommy to friends, Tom to many, passed away on September 8, 2020. He was 72 years old. He passed peacefully with his wife of 49 years, Nancy Carter (Wilt) by his side. He is also survived by his son, Tanner Carter (Easley, SC), daughter, Tamra Vaughn (Carter) (Alpharetta, GA) as well as five grandchildren, Tripp, Madison, Hudson, Maren and Emma. He was the proud son of James E Carter & Betty Jean Carter (Illinois).
An Elk, a Mason and Shriner, a former PGA Teaching professional, professional salesperson and fundraiser in causes he believed in deeply, Tom touched many lives and enjoyed his affiliation with the Macon Chamber of Commerce and the many events, social clubs and people that filled his life with purpose until the end. Golf and helping children defined the roles he chose in his later years, most prominently in his efforts to raise funds and awareness of the Big Henry Golf Classic. Played annually, it raises money for organizations that directly help children, including the Methodist Home for Children and Youth.
Tommy will be dearly missed by many, as a loving friend, father, Papa to the grandchildren and husband. A celebration of life will be held at a time to be determined, and no formal funeral will be held. His wish was to be cremated, and he will be laid to rest alongside his brothers, parents and other family in Mt. Vernon, IL. In lieu of flowers, his wishes included donating to heart health related causes, and to the Big Henry Golf Classic at: The Big Henry Fund, 136 N Haven Dr., Macon, GA 31210 / Info: bighenryfund.org
