Coach Rodney Collins went home to be with Jesus on January 2, 2024. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 1:00PM with visitation following, at the Ingleside Baptist Church Chapel, 834 Wimbish Road, Macon, GA 31210.
Coach was born on March 16, 1948 in Hawkinsville, GA and graduated from Hawkinsville High School. He went to Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN on a football scholarship where he played quarterback and punted. His first coaching job was at Northside Junior High in Warner Robins, GA in 1970. He was asked to start the athletic program at Baker Academy in Hawkinsville, GA. He coached at several high schools including Briarwood and Southland with the longest being at Stratford Academy as Head Coach for over 20 years.
His life was a living testimony to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and he lived to honor Him. Because of this, God honored him throughout his coaching career which included, as Head Football coach, three State Football Championships at Stratford, one State Football Championship at Briarwood, GISA Coach of the Year for three years, Regional Championships for 5 years, GISA Regional Coach of the Year for 5 years, GISA 2012 Coaches Association Distinguished Service Award and GISA Distinguished Service Award 1999-2000. Coach also won several track and field State Championships while coaching track.
Coach’s greatest achievement was being a loving husband, father and being Poppy to his three grandchildren. He loved golfing and spending time with his family. He also loved starting his day at the Stratford Preschool opening the doors for the kids with his funny hats.
Coach was preceded in death by his parents J.P. “Bud” and Alice Mays Collins, stepmother Rubye Collins, brother Larry Collins and brother-in-law David Seagraves.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Wanda Collins, daughter, Shannon Dickerson (Trey), son Chad Collins (Sabrina); grandchildren, Levi Dickerson and Josie and Baynes Collins; sister Cathy Seagraves, sister-in-law Cindy Atha, brother-in-law Max Alligood (Joy), and several nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank all of the kind, compassionate staff at Madison Heights at The Prado, Heartland Hospice and all the loving sitters for taking such wonderful care of our Coach.
